White Sands

L43

The drive was 7 hours long to get there from Tucson. The interstate had been closed and we were sent on a detour for well over an hour.

And let me tell you… this area of New Mexico… not the most awesome stretch of land in the U.S.

There were constant signs warning of dust storms. There was a constant spray of dirt covering the car.  The little towns were worn down along the way. It was desolate. And if you’ve ever seen the movie “Rango”… this is how it looked. Like it was going to dry up and blow away any minute.

But by the time we arrived in Las Cruces, the mountains were showing once again. And they were beautiful and rugged. There was a haze in the air, but not from pollution…but from sand and dirt.

We drove a little further into the desert past the mountains and upon first sight, I was leary that I had spent all that time in the car to be severely disappointed.

And then they were there.

White dunes.

As high and as far as you can see. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. Nothing I had ever felt before.

So the first thing I did, was take my shoes off. To feel it between my toes.

Heaven.

The wind was blowing and the sand was hitting my face and I didn’t care. It looked like a snow storm, by it was warm.  (and my camera equipment… forget about it…)

It was worth the drive to see the sun go down.

It was worth it to feel the sand.
