It Pleased Us Back This Morning

This morning, I sat in my front porch, sipping my coffee. Just like I do a lot of mornings. But this morning, I had my snow boots on, gloves, camera bag packed and I waited for the sun to start peeking from behind the houses across the street. The heavy frost/ snow had stayed on the trees overnight, and I could finally get some beautiful sunrise shots of the amazing white wonderland we’ve been getting to live in for the last few days.  I only had about a half hour to drive, shoot and be back for breakfast. I had hoped the train wouldn’t be in my way (which it wasn’t) and I drove peacefully into one of my favorite places to shoot. The wind normally blows everything away, and we’re left with grey barren ugliness from January until spring time. So…it was one of those “I gotta get out there”  kind of mornings. Which, in Wyoming wintertime, those don’t happen all that often.  And it was purple out there today. A beautiful morning shade of hazy purple. And it reminded me of a line in Alice Walker’s book, a line I think about all the time when I’m in a beautiful place. Of course I want to capture it, but before I do…..I always have to appreciate it first. Quietly.

“I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don’t notice it. People think pleasing God is all God cares about. But any fool living in the world can see it always trying to please us back.”

Well, big guy, I definitely was no fool this morning, the purple was too beautiful not to notice.
