Today marked the beginning of a new school year for my little dino dude.
He was super excited about being there.
For two hours.
He has two Denver appointments today. These extra things that we have to deal with tend to interfere sometimes….. And that’s OK. But, I can’t help but feel bad for him, because he’s missing it. Those first exciting moments with a new teacher. New classmates. New routines. But I’m happy he got to go for a couple hours. And that’s what’s important.
He was ready for today. He’s grown three inches over the summer. His features are changing. He knows what to expect and he was ready to see his friends. We as parents knew what to expect and what to do. And we as a family are ready to conquer the first grade. We took a small apple bouquet to his teacher, as they need reassurance that they have our support and we know that it’s scary for them too. They have a pretty important job ahead of them. Teachers have a power over our children that most people in their lives do not have. The power to change them. Mold them. In good ways and bad. My husband and I have very different memories of first grade. He loved his first grade teacher. I was scared to death of mine. And because of that… I still can’t read aloud in front of people. I tell you, they have a power over you.
I whispered to my little man…”be awesome today.”
He whispered back “don’t worry mom, I will.”
And he will, I know it.

And to prepare for this day, my other new tradition, last week while he was gone… I watched all the awesome back to school movies from my childhood. I totally recommend it. They are classic and I promise they will make you smile.
