This kitchen of mine.
I haven’t been able to seem to get it the way I want it.
I spend a good share of time in there and I want it to be a place where I want to be.
Last summer I decided it needed color, so I painted it orange-ish. Burnt orange. I wore on me. I didn’t like it. It wasn’t working and it didn’t really go with the rest of this level. So a couple weekends ago, I white washed it. (my husband was flabbergasted with me with the choice of color, but when it was all done he saw my vision and agrees it looks much better) Some of it. I finished it up this past weekend. I cracked a bottle of wine at 7:00pm, put a movie on the Ipad and went to work. I love modern conveniences. By midnight it was done. That’s the way I roll. And I love it. Then… I put my husband to work.
It was missing something. I needed something. So I hung a giant open shelf above the sink with readily available coffee cups, etc. I always feel bad when people are rummaging trying to find things, so if they out in the open, it’s much better. We constantly have people here, especially in the upcoming season, so I want it to be better for them.
I also didn’t love the open space above my cupboards. I tried painting them different colors. I didn’t work… so I had the hubby cut wood to match the shelf and viola… much better. Now I just have to fill it again (I took everything out that was there previously because it didn’t go and my tastes have changed immensely over the last 10 years….oh who am I kidding, my tastes change every six months or so) And the wood cutting… well lets just say, it took a miracle. Living in a 100 year old house has it’s obstacles. EVERYTHING IS UNEVEN. Everything.
When I was done, I plugged in the coffee maker (I didn’t jump on the Keurig bandwagon, I love my fresh ground coffee much better and it’s comforting for me) the one where I just push a button and coffee comes out, ground some coffee in the bean grinder we’ve had since we were 19 years old, and ten minutes later, stood in my kitchen enjoying a cup of coffee and admired our work.
And…if anyone can point out what is wrong in this first picture… I will send you a 5×7 copy of one of those prints.
