“It was, as I have said, a fine autumnal day; the sky was clear and serene, and nature wore that rich and golden livery which we always associate with the idea of abundance. The forests had put on their sober brown and yellow, while some trees of the tenderer kind had been nipped by the frosts into brilliant dyes of orange, purple, and scarlet. ” ~Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.
I read this quickly over this past weekend while the snow fell. I loved how he described things throughout the entire book. The way he does it was so thoughtful and colorful. (all 70 pages of it) I didn’t find it scary, I think mostly because I knew what was coming in the story, but still, it was interesting to read the original. I adored it.
We enjoyed our own fall day today. I drug my kiddo out into the crisp air almost the entire day. We hiked into the mountains early in the morning. I had originally planned to have the large feast in the forest with candles and pumpkins, etc….but we ran low on time and warm weather. In other years we would have been able to do it much later in the month. Cest la vie. So, we improvised and had a picnic breakfast in the woods. It was nice. Good excersise and good company with my little dino dude.

A short time later we cruised down to our favorite pumpkin spot. (have I ever mentioned how much I love pumpkin patch day?) It was the first year we’ve been that it was a tad bit chilly and the outside fire was roaring down there. I love walking onto the property and looking out over ALL the pumpkins and get so excited that I will come home with the perfect one that I got to pick out from thousands and thousands. (and later, I’ll keep a few of the seeds and grow my own!) The colors are so inviting to me. The smell. The black birds. All of it. It was the first year I didn’t dress him in a fall-ish outfit and try to get the perfect picture with him and the perfect pumpkin. We all kind of hopped in the car like ragamuffins and went out into the fields! And this year, we thought he should pull his own weight by having to drag his uncle around in the wagon, instead of us hauling him everywhere.

And then to top it off…we went through the corn maze for the first time at this farm. (Though my boys tuckered out halfway through) and it does seem a bit creepy in there when it’s not bright and sunshiny out, even though I know that if I get into one row of corn and keep walking I will eventually come out)

And at the end of a very long day, at the early hour of 7pm, I carried my sleeping boy to bed. Something that I’m so grateful that I can still do, as I know, in the next few years I won’t be able to. We had a beautiful day, and I am so blessed and grateful for everything I am surrounded by.
